Censorship From Obscene Material Today, in the 1990s, citizens in our society are being bombarded with obscene material from every direction. From the hate lyrics of Guns N Roses to the satanic lyrics of Montley Crue and Marilyn Manson to the sexually explicit graphical content of todays movies, the issue is how much society is going to permit and where we, as a society, should we draw the line. The freedom of speech has always been considered a right, but that doesnt mean that you can shout, Fire! in a crowded movie theater. The real question is whether such material is harmful or dangerous to our society. Many people are asking whether or not we should censor offensive material. They believe that some material is too†¦show more content†¦The critics of this point of view think that private-sector censorship will not be enough. They believe that the entertainment industry will not be able to control itself. Private-sector restrictions do not have the authority of the law, therefore they cannot succes sfully draw the line between what can and cannot be said in public. The third and final possible solution is no censorship at all. While many Americans are troubled by what they feel is offensive speech, and feel that it should be restricted by law, advocates of the third solution disagree. They feel that there is more harm in restricting free speech than by the offensive speech itself. In the bill of rights, the first amendment says, Congress shall make no long abridging the freedom of speech. The first amendment was intended to protect the minorities from the tyranny of the majorities. The advocates of this view feel that the minority has a right to express themselves regardless of the opinion of the majority. Free speech matters because it encourages creativity. Without the freedom of speech, America would probably be dull and drab like a communist country such as the former USSR. Teaching Morals and Ethics in Public Schools The question of whether or not schools should teach ethics and morals is misleading, because ethics and morals are two different things. Websters Dictionary defines ethics as a particular system of principles and rules concerning duty, whether true or false, and morals as motivation based on ideas of right and wrong. As I take it, ethics implies a set of basic rules to abide by, whereas morals strictly set down what to believe, and what not to. I have no objections to schools teaching ethics, however I do not think schools, or any authority for that matter, should be teaching children morals. Power can corrupt anybody who steps up as a leader, especially when power is unchecked. In Animal Farm, by George Orwell, Snowball and Napoleon fight for the top spot as leader, but on the way they become corrupted. In the end Snowball benefited the farm in a positive way for the animals, and not abusing his power. Unlike Snowball, Napoleon showed his authority through fear and intimidation. â€Å"When they had finished their confession, the dogs promptly tore their throats out and in a terrible voice Napoleon demanded whether any other animal had anything to confess (p. 75). † Demanding the animals to confess a crime they never had done with force, then illing them puts fear in the rest of the animals causing them to not act out against Napoleon. Also this fear and intimidation puts down the animals making them feel feeble. â€Å"Napoleon himself, majestically upright, casting haughty glances from side to side, and with his dogs gamboling round him (p. 117). † Himself standing up on two feet giving arrogant looks, he puts himself above all others showing he has more power and authority then anyone. Also the dogs surrounding him shows that no one can touch him putting more animals down again. So it shows that Napoleon is able to maintain his ower by putting others below him and putting fear into them. Napoleon was able to keep his power by fear and eliminating the competition, while Snowball used his intelligence and speeches to only have good for the animals he still lost his power. It shows that even do fear and intimidation keep your power its wrong and corrupted. It’s better to have the most sincere interests for the people, and not to put others below you. Snowball seems to be a better candidate as a leader compared to Napoleon’s cruelty. Even the best of people can become corrupted with power and abuse it. Employee referrals are the other method of recruitment in which the employees are identified with the reference of current employees working in the organization. This method is identified as the most progressive method, because the suitable candidates gets selected with the help of this method. From the above shown two methods, the least risk is carried out with the job posting method. In this method as the candidates are getting selected internally from the organization. Similarly for internal recruitment methods, the external recruitment methods are various in numbers. The advertisements through the newspaper are the traditional and most impressive method for the external recruitment. This method is also carried out in three ways. It also involves less risk too, because in this method, the recruitment is identified through step by step process which reduces the probabilities of risk as well. Reason for selection: Out of both these methods, the most suitable method is from both external and internal methods are identified as the job posting (from internal recruitment) and second method is the advertisement method (from external recruitment). The reason for selecting this process is that they are comparatively less risky in comparison to the other processes. Both these processes are carried out in the sequential manner and also have their unique approach for performing the management process.
